Frequently asked questions

Here are some of the questions most often asked

  • Are my sessions covered by insurance? Do you direct bill?

Most extended health benefits cover Masters level therapists for mental health counselling at a certain percentage or up to a dollar amount.  Every plan has its own specifics, and it is best to check with your insurance or benefits provider if they cover counselling from providers registered with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association.

Yes, I am signed up to provide direct billing for multiple insurance providers. However, not all plans allow for direct billing. We can put through a claim after the first session and see if qualifies for direct billing.  Otherwise, you are provided a receipt of payment and can submit this receipt to your insurance provider for reimbursement.

I also provide service through certain employee assistance programs (EAP), First Nation Health Authority (FNHA), Crime Victim Assistance Program (CVAP), and Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC).

  • How often should I come to therapy?

This depends on what you are hoping to work on and gain from therapy.  Sometimes there is a specific issue or goal, and weekly therapy can be most beneficial.  Sometimes every two weeks works best for consistent but spaced-out support.  However, monthly sessions might be all you have time for and that works too.

  • It has been a while, can I come back?

Of course!  Sometimes things are too busy, and life gets in the way, or we complete our counselling goals.  Life keeps happening! Even if it has been months or years, you are welcome back.

  • Are your appointments available in person or online?

Both in person and online appointments are available.  In person sessions happen at unit #103 at 204 Sixth St, in New Westminster. Online appointments are also available, just let me know if in person or online is preferred for that day.

  • How do I know if you are the right fit?

Finding the right fit can be hard, and it relies a lot on checking in with our own feelings.  Initial consults are offered for this reason, so you can see how you feel during a brief conversation.  Are you feeling heard and understood?  Do I feel like an easy or safe person to speak to?  It can also be helpful to think of some questions that are important to you, and I can answer them to the best of my ability.

  • Do you provide sliding scale or lower cost sessions?

Sliding scale and lower cost sessions are provided for people who have no insurance or programming coverage or benefits and cannot afford to pay full session rates but would still like to access services.  These spots are limited and can change depending on circumstances.  Please reach out and we can discuss the details and if there is current availability. For another resource Open Path Collective has a database of local counsellors who accept sliding scale.
